Abstract:
This file, DINSYS[0,BGB]SAIL, contains speculations on the
design of natural and artificial intellectual systems. The primary
goal of these speculations is to suggest the appearance and context
of a hard technical theory of intellectual phenomena. The secondary
goal is to define a set of terms and topics for discussing the more
provocative and futuristic aspects of artificial intelligence.

1. The Magnitude of Impact of a Theory of Intelligence.
Obtaining a theory of intelligence will have a massive impact
on human existence. At present there are several areas of research
relating to intellectual systems. There are cybernetic, genetic,
psychological, and physiological approachs; there is also a dichotomy
between so called "natural" and "artificial" intelligence research.
However, I wish to speculate for a moment on what happens when all
these intelligence researchers find the knowledge for which they
seek, when the phenomena of intelligence arising in genes and
germanium is well understood and a corresponding intelligence
technology is available.
First, a theory of intelligence, like the Copernician and
Darwinian theories, will further reduce the self centered divinity in
mankind's image of himself. The mind and soul of man will be exposed
to study and modification and man will no longer be the culmination
of evolution, but will replace himself with better intellectual
entities some of which will grow out of individual men build
themselves into androids; other entities will be built by men as
robots; and finally androids and robots will replicate themselves and
others.
Second, a theory of intelligence will have a massive affect
on the national, international, political and military affairs of
men. Like nuclear physics, a theory of intelligence has a number of
atomic bombs that will become accessible before the whole theory
takes shape.

At present it is not clear whether a threshold, or chain reaction
process exists or whether one just piles up computer power.

Thus the impact of a theory of intelligence on mankind will
exceed the total scientific, social and philosophical impact of the
atomic bomb, Darwin, the steam engine, Copernicus, the printing
press, Christ, fire and agriculture. A massive landing of extra
terrestials is humdrum when compared to compared to the implications
of knowing the nature of intelligence.

COMPUTER ANALOGY - THEORY OF INTELLECT.
In this sub section, I wish to speculate a theory around the
analogy that the homo sapien mind and brain is like a computer with a
time sharing system running a load of phantom jobs.
Like a computer, a man has a memory, a processor and IO devices. The
memory contains a world model, a self model and action sequences. The
processor executes sequences of actions, and the IO devices provide
sight, hearing, locomotion, manipulation, speech, et cetera.
The experience called stream of counsciousness, is a reality
simulator that is running nearly in correlation with sense data of
the here and now.
Attention involves interrupt routines, a job scheduler, and a result
evaluator.
Free will is an illusion stemming from the time and memory space
limitations of running a simulation of a system simulating itself.
3. SELF EXISTENCE.

There is one inescapable intellectual entity called the self;
the existence and nature of other intellectual entities is inferred
with respect to one's self. Self existence consists of two universe,
there is the external physical universe and there is the internal
mental universe of the self.

The answer to the question "why am I here ?", is to realize
that given existence it had to be somewhere. Specific examples of non
existence are easily generated, think of all the people who aren't
here today, because their potential ancestors died out in the Black
Plague of 1210.
For the convenience of an observer, portions of the physical world
can be grouped together as objects. An object may or may not have
intellect; an intellectual object consists of memory, process and IO.
Both hardware and software systems have input, output and memory
states. Hardware is further characterized by consuming power and
being real time dependent.
x. ARTIFACTS - TOYS, TOOLS AND WEAPONS.
Assume a universe of objects which can be divided into those
objects that have intellect and those objects that do not. Further
assume that the non-intellect objects can be classified as either
`natural' objects that are never used by an intellectual entity, or
as `artifact' objects that are used by intellectual entities.
Finally, define an artifact object as a toy when it is used by a
intellectual entity to change its own memory states; and define an
artifact as a tool when it is used to alter the state of
non-intellectual objects; and define an artifact as a weapon when it
is used by one intellectual entity to alter the memory states of
another intellect.
These assumptions and definitions lead to a few amusing
theorems; first consider artifacts that have dual roles:
A toy used as a tool -
A toy used as a weapon -
A tool used as a toy - scissors for cutting paper dolls.
A tool used as a weapon - woodsman's axe for murder.
A weapon used as a tool - canal digging with atomic bombs.
A weapon used as a toy - suicide.
